Matua’s selection of single-vineyard wines is not produced in mediocre vintages, “but when it’s on, it’s on”, the wine company says. These small-batch, high-priced wines are promoted as “the pick of the pick of the bunch”. Matua – originally Matua Valley – was established by Ross and Bill Spence at Waimauku, in West Auckland, in 1974. That year, using locally grown grapes, the brothers produced this country’s first sauvignon blanc – five years before the first sauvignon blanc flowed in Marlborough. Matua is now part of Treasury Wine Estates, a listed company…
