    The Air New Zealand Wine Awards has special status among our dozen wine shows, because it’s run by the industry body, NZ Winegrowers. Half the judges are winemakers, together with wine educators, distributors, sommeliers and commentators. Their standard of assessment is generally high and the top wines enjoy strong demand. A gold medal today certainly offers a far more reliable guide to quality than in the past. Des Lagan, who judged at the 1971 national competition, later recalled that one sample was overlooked for a medal, “a fact for which some of my brother judges must accept responsibility…”
