Christmas can be stressful, especially if you are anticipating the arrival of in-laws. However, it’s also a perfect excuse to open some great bottles – special occasions deserve special wines.

Christmas is meant to be “merry”, so a lightly chilled bottle of bubbly always hits the spot. One of my favourites is Akarua Central Otago Vintage Brut 2010 (•••••, $45). Disgorged after four years maturing on its yeast lees, it is highly fragrant, with intense, peachy, yeasty flavours, showing lovely complexity and length. Deutz Marlborough Cuveé Blanc de Blancs 2011 (••••½, $26) is a good buy – citrusy, biscuity, very fresh and vivacious. Salmon, ham, lamb and turkey are always popular…
